Last week, Illinois Central College Police promoted officers Craig Hightower and Erika Schwiderski to the rank of Sergeant.
Officer Erika Schwiderski holds her daughter following the promotion ceremony held at the ICC – East Peoria Campus on Monday, July 21.
The sergeant’s promotional exam was a competitive process open to all full time ICC police officers. Its purpose was to assess the candidate’s communication skills, administrative ability, judgment, decision making capabilities, problem solving skills, supervisory competence, knowledge of college policies & procedures, time management skills and delegating & prioritizing abilities. Erika and Craig attained the highest overall scores in the four phase process.
Erika Schwiderski received an associate’s degree from ICC in 2007 and a bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration from Western Illinois University in 2009. She graduated from the Illinois State Police Academy and began her law enforcement career with the ICC Campus Police Department in 2009.
Craig Hightower graduated from the Police Training Institute and began his police career with the Streator Police Department in 1978. After 10 years in Streator, Craig joined the Peoria Police Department, serving 22 years as a patrol officer, DARE officer, drug enforcement officer and spent his final nine years at Peoria P.D. as a Crime Scene Investigator. Craig has been with the Illinois Central College Campus Police Department since February of 2012.

ICC awarded over 1,000 degrees for the Spring 2014 Semester. Trevor Mileur and Marques Brown were awarded as 2014 ICC Students of the Year. ICC Accounting Faculty Edward Smith was recognized for the 2014 Teaching Excellence Award and ICC Graphic Design Faculty David Smit was recognized for the 2014 Gallion Award. Tim Elder received the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award. Congrats!

ICC President John Erwin and Xiamen Huaxia Vocational and Technical College President Wang Xiaoru and Sam Wong cut the ribbon to unveil the new ICC International Center and Chinese Language Institute.
This week, ICC officially unveiled the new Chinese Language Institute and International Center. The purpose of the Center is to foster intercultural exchanges of knowledge and culture between ICC, our sister institutions in China and other countries.
Representatives from one of ICC’s sister institutions, Xiamen Huaxia College, joined Dr. Erwin to commemorate the official unveiling. Vice President of Diversity Dr. Rita Ali, ICC Board of Trustees members Katherine Coyle, Sue Portscheller, and Trevor Mileur, and Peoria City Council member Casey Johnson were on hand to thank President Wang Xiaoru and Sam Wang for more than a decade of support in the exchange of learning and culture between Xiamen Huaxia and ICC.
Dr. Erwin presented President Wang a handblown glass vase commissioned by ICC grad Jeremie Draper as a symbol of the friendship and collaboration between the two colleges.
Since the collaboration began, 36 ICC students have studied with our sister colleges in China, with plans for two more engineering students to attend this summer. In any given semester, approximately 200 international students representing 55 different countries attend ICC.
ICC Health Careers Student Josiah Candler shared a beautiful shot of a rainbow over the ICC CougarPlex on the ICC – East Peoria Campus on Wednesday evening.
Nick Maloof, along with the help of his daughters and the cast of ICC Readers’ Theatre, lead the audience in the Grand Finale at the 2014 Jim Maloof : Legacy of Love for the Arts event.
Under the direction of ICC Professor Brent Goken, the event is organized by ICC Students with the help and support of faculty and staff. The 2014 Celebration showcased over 70 performers on stage including PICK Percussions – Pulse of Peoria Drumline, the Peoria Ballet, Peoria Players Theatre, ICC Vocal Jazz, the ICC Readers’ Theatre, and the Maloof Granddaughters. The event featured remarks from Julie Locke – Chairman and Founder of Cherish Every Moment Dax Locke Foundation.
Over $2,000 was raised to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Hospital through a good will offering. President John Erwin gave welcome remarks and Trustees Gale Thetford and Trevor Mileur were in attendance.
If you missed Friday night’s show — ICC Readers’ Theatre is giving a Final Performance of their 2014 Show ‘Words of Freedom’ tonight : Monday, April 14 at 6:30pm in the ICC – East Peoria Campus : Lecture/Recital Hall 127F. Admission is free and all are welcome!
ICC Student Trustee Trevor Mileur grabs a quick ‘selfie‘ with Illinois Governor Pat Quinn after a press conference in which the Governor announced a $2.6 Million Capital Investment in the college from the State of Illinois.
The capital investment will be used towards funding a new Sustainability Center located near Route 24 on the ICC – East Peoria Campus. ICC President John Erwin thanked the Governor and credited the ICC Board of Trustees for their continued support of capital projects to advance the college’s educational mission. read more
Members of the ICC Phi Theta Kappa, Upsilon Mu Chapter took some time to give back over break.
Illinois Central College Students joined with other community colleges in the Illinois Region of Phi Theta Kappa to help a family of 7 prepare to start the rebuilding process.

ICC Guard #30 ShaVonn Watkins (Peoria,IL) is all smiles as she takes the court for the first time since tearing her ACL in December. The ICC Sophomore sunk the final three-pointer in her career as a Cougar with the support of her teammates, coaches, and the ISU – Club Team.
ShaVonn scored “the best three of the game” sinking her shot with only :20 remaining on the clock in their 2014 Pink Game for Breast Cancer awareness. #Play4Kay
The #3 Cougars are now 26-3 and will close out the regular season with a home game on Wednesday vs. Robert Morris University – Springfield at 5:30 at Ramsey Gym. ICC will recognize their six sophomores: Abi Besso, Naomi Harris, Tiffany Masters, Helena Rodriguez, ShaVonn Watkins, and Chanta Wright before the game.
The #6 Illinois Central College Lady Cougars upset the #1 ranked Northern Iowa Area CC 82-81 with an incredible buzzer beating 3-point shot from Helena Rodriguez!
